Final Fantasy X is the first Final Fantasy to
come out on the Playstation 2, and it boasts some of the best graphics and
sound on any console ever. It is the first Final Fantasy and the first big
budget game by Squaresoft that reaches into the 128 bit consoles.
In Final Fantasy X you start out as Tidus playing
in a blitzball game. As the game proceeds a great entity known as Sin
approaches the stadium destroys it, and causes a portal to open up in the sky
over the city of Zanarkand. As you move along you meet up with a familiar
person, Auron. You eventually get sucked into the portal and start “your
story” in the parallel dimension of the planet Spira.
The graphics are well polished and smooth around
the edges (very little artifacting and jittery lines around polygons). At some
times though on some spells like Holy part of the graphic or character etc.
kind of disappears underground, but hey no game is perfect.
With the music you have quite a mixed bag. Some
songs are technoish, some are orchestrated (with just a synthesizer, but a
good one), and some are beats and soft instruments, mostly for dungeons and
stuff like that. Nobuo Uematsu has two new helpers doing the scoring with him
so the music is nice and fresh.
The sound effects are great. Unlike previous
games, X actually uses real ones, not mouth noises! The Aeons (summon
monsters) actually make thuds and stuff that sound real. The voice acting is
good but not great. Most of the time its pretty good but sometimes you just
think like “Tidus you sounded like an idiot just now!”, but it’s
excellent in all compared to most other games.
All in all I think that Final Fantasy X is the best one yet (unless FF
VI got completely remade of course). It’s a very smooth operating and easy
for beginners. I give Final Fantasy X a 9.0
out of 10.0
